LEADVILLE — Full Circle of Lake County provides opportunities, education and caring relationships to help unite Lake County, foster healthy youth choices and support thriving families. This mission is achieved through six youth programs serving fourth and 12th graders and four educational programs for parents and families. This past year, Full Circle served 322 youth and 141 parents with 788 activities.
One of Full Circle’s premier programs is the Outdoor Leadership Club for Lake County seventh and eighth graders. Thanks to continued Vail Echo support, the Outdoor Leadership Club is alive and thriving! The Outdoor Leadership Club is continuing the strong tradition of introducing youth to activities such hiking, camping and rock climbing, as well as environmental awareness education and community service projects. Additionally, after-school activities are offered two days a week as well as one weekend activity each month during the school year. During school holidays, the club conducts overnight camping and backpacking trips locally and adventure trips to Moab, Utah, for the highest-attending students twice a year.
TRIP OF A LIFETIME
Recently, nine eighth-grade Outdoor Leadership Club girls experienced a trip of a lifetime when they embarked on a three-day, whirlwind climbing trek to Moab, Utah. Weeks of preparation and honing indoor and outdoor climbing skills paid off for these young women whose lives would be forever changed.
Overcoming understandable fear and demonstrating impressive teamwork, the girls hiked Morning Glory Canyon, a 6-mile hike requiring two 100-foot rappels. One of their most spectacular feats was balancing against each other while rappelling off of a 100-foot natural arch. After testing their physical and emotional strength, the campfire brownies were a big hit. The only complaint expressed was that they couldn’t stay in Utah longer. Next year is right around the corner, girls!
