VMS lax gets first varsity team wins

AURORA — A dynasty has been born.

That’s probably a little over the top, but Vail Mountain School varsity boys lacrosse made its debut this weekend with a 12-6 victory Friday at Clear Creek and yet another win, 7-4 at Gateway, on Saturday.

And if one looks on laxpower.com’s Colorado rankings, the Gore Rangers are ranked No. 14 in the state.

“We’re on the map,” VMS coach Matt Felser joked.

Being ranked 14th in the state is worth a bit of a chuckle — it’s clearly a computer anomaly — but a program winning its first two varsity matches is no laughing matter.

“Last year we played a full JV schedule and, this year, we’ve added some varsity games to test the waters,” Felser said. “We stepped up to the challenge.”

Saturday’s game against Gateway was particularly illustrative. When going from the JV to varsity ranks, it’s all about speed and size, but the young Gore Rangers held their own.

“The adjustment is sticking your nose in there on ground balls, and getting dirty,” Felser said.

Against Gateway, Brandon Rosenbach and Luke Verratti had hat tricks and Tyler Hancock also scored. On Friday in Idaho Springs, Rosenbach, Verratti and Hancock combined for eight, while Clay Kirwood, Dylan Hardenbergh and Nick Whiteford also baptized the net.

John Linn got the win as the goalie in both games.

“It’s been really cool to watch it all come together,” Felser said. “Our boys are seeing a lot of new things as far as lacrosse goes. We have a wide range of experience with some kids who have traveled to Denver before to play to having one of our freshmen start his first game in the first lacrosse game he’s ever seen.”

Welcome to the game, Tio Lloyd.

VMS is 3-0 this year. Its other win came against Steamboat Springs’ JV. The Gore Rangers head to Telluride on Saturday to face the Miners’ varsity squad. It will be VMS’ first foray into the Mountain Conference, which the team hopes to join next season.
