EAGLE-VAIL — For those who want their 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships taste buds tempted a little early, the Vail Valley Foundation and the magazine division of the Vail Daily have a treat for them this summer — a new magazine previewing the events.
The Foundation recently picked the Daily’s magazine division as its print partner for the preview, which will be distributed in July in the Vail Valley, of course, along with the other markets covered by Colorado Mountain News Media — Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Summit County and Grand County. The magazine will also be distributed in some of the wealthier areas of the Denver area.
“We’ve been doing a lot of other things with the Vail Daily,” said Duncan Horner, Vail Valley Foundation vice president of marketing. “We like the level of distribution they’ve offered, especially in our drive markets.”
Horner said there’s a simple reason the magazine will hit the streets in the summer — to drum up interest in places that might not be familiar with the two-week event that takes place in February.
“It’s important to start rolling that out early,” Horner said.
Sue Ludlow, who heads the magazine division, said she’s excited about the prospects for the new publication, for its own sake as well as the progress it represents.
NEW LOOK FOR EXISTING MAGAZINES
Ludlow, a longtime veteran of the magazine industry in New York, has held her job with the Vail Daily for about six months. In that time, the new arm of the newspaper has changed the look of several publications and has revamped the distribution network.
Cynthia Bruggeman, the national sales representative for the magazine division and another longtime veteran of the magazine business, said she’s been impressed by the changes to the distribution system.
“We can tell people where magazines are going, how many are going out, whether they’re going to (lodging) rooms or lobbies,” Bruggeman said. “The level of detail is incredible.”
And the magazines themselves have changed. The long-running EAT magazine, for instance, now has an online component people will find handy, especially if they have smartphones. The online version of EAT will provide links directly to the websites of participating restaurants, and those with smartphones can call for reservations.
The Daily’s ART and HOME magazines have also been re-designed with a more current look, Ludlow said. And the high country golf guide, created in cooperation with the Summit Daily News, is morphing into a guide to golf around the mountains and will be distributed in all of Colorado Mountain News Media’s markets.
Vail Daily Publisher Don Rogers said he’s excited about the changes he’s seen to the numerous magazines the company prints and is looking forward to more in the coming months.
“I think we’re really putting out world-class publications for world class events and readers,” Bruggeman said.
