Rescue Rendezvous rolls around today and Sunday

EAGLE COUNTY — Training horses is like training children, and you should probably be required to do the former before you’re allowed to do the latter.

Local rancher Bud Gates said that, and both his horses and kids turned out great.

For example, with both horses and children you’ll get further with a carrot than a whip. And usually, when you want to go to the whip it’s because you haven’t made your expectations clear.

Neither horses nor children are clairvoyant.

Toward that point, the Mountain Valley Horse Rescue’s Rescue Rendezvous is a horse expo where trainers will do demonstrations and classes with rescue horses.

“It’s prime adoption season,” said Shana Davis with Mountain Valley Horse Rescue.

This is their third rescue rendezvous. The first two were awesome, she said.

This one adds a dinner and dance tonight.

“It’s always good to get the equine community involved, and this year we wanted to get the entire community involved,” she said.

Vendors will sell everything from art to horse feed, as well as supplements for both people and horses.

Tonight they’ll do a cowboy auction.

The cowboys will have an auction item on their hand that you’ll buy, then you can dance with your cowboy. Anything else is up to the two of you to arrange.

Auction items include original artwork, oil paintings, weekend getaways at the Wild Skies Lodge on the Flattops, Minturn Inn and a Martin roping saddle.

On Sunday, Mother’s Day, they’re doing horseback yoga and then a tribute to the brood mares in the rescue.

They have 14 horses in the rescue right now.

Mountain Valley Horse Rescue was inspired by the rescue of two starved horses abandoned in November 2004. A group of Eagle Valley horse enthusiasts recognized the need for a regional rescue organization and formed Mountain Valley Horse Rescue in April 2005.
