Vail starts ‘working group’ for retail pot

VAIL — The town of Vail is forming a 16-member “working group” that will help town officials gather information and provide policy options for consideration by the town council on the topic of retail marijuana sales.

Members of the Recreational Marijuana Working Group will meet three times between mid-May and mid-June. The schedule has been created to allow for a community-wide discussion on the issue as the town council contemplates adoption of a retail marijuana sales policy in Vail before a moratorium expires July 31. The timeline also includes discussions with members of the Planning and Environmental Commission and town council updates.

MANY OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Passage of Amendment 64 by Colorado voters in 2012 establishes a wide spectrum of options for local governments to consider, ranging from a prohibition on the operation of retail establishments to regulations reflecting the extent allowed by state law.

MEMBERS OF THE WORKING GROUP

Members of the working group were recruited by the town staff upon the recommendation of the town council and represent organizations including: Eagle County Schools, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Lionshead Merchants Association, Vail Board of Realtors, Vail Chamber & Business Association, Vail Commission on Special Events, Vail Economic Advisory Council, Vail Homeowners Association, Vail Local Licensing Authority, Vail Local Marketing District Advisory Council, Vail Police Department, Vail Resorts, Vail Valley Medical Center, Vail Valley Partnership and Vail Valley Young Professionals. In addition, a representative from the Denver-based Cannabis Business Alliance will join in the discussions.

ATTEND THE FIRST MEETING

The group will hold its first meeting Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Grand View room, located on the third level of the Lionshead Welcome Center. The two remaining meetings, May 28 and June 11, will also take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will be held in the Community Room of the Vail Public Library. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meetings and will be invited to offer written comments as part of the agenda.
