Town of Avon swears in new councilman

AVON — For Matt Gennett, now is a perfect time to join the town council.

The Wildridge resident and former town planner is now an official member of Avon’s government after Judge Buck Allen swore him in on Tuesday.

Gennett, who is now a planner for the town of Silverthorne, ran for Avon council in 2012 and was narrowly defeated by a margin of less than 10 votes. He said at that time, his platform was focused on Avon aligning with the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and rebranding itself to fit the image of a year-round recreational hub.

With the town garnering the official apres spot on the World Championships’ program and undergoing an effort to offer more options for hikers and bikers, Gennett said he’s happy with the direction Avon is headed.

“The trails that are going up in Wildridge is something I would have wanted to work on,” he said. “It’s a really exciting time for me to join the town council.”

Nevertheless, Gennett said he’s probably not going to do or say a whole lot, at first.

Getting A feel for Things

“I’m just going to try to absorb at the first few meetings, just get a sense for what the community wants the most, get a feel for the biggest issues on the agenda and just go from there,” he said.

Gennett is sitting in for the remainder of former councilman Todd Goulding’s term; Goulding stepped down after moving to Edwards. The term runs until November and Gennett said he plans to run for re-election at that time.

“I’ll probably have to start campaigning again already in August,” he said.

No stranger to the inner-workings of Avon, Gennett used to work for the town as a planning manager and senior planner and worked on The Westin project. On Tuesday, Mayor Rich Carroll told Gennett he’s looking forward to having his expertise on the council.

“We definitely appreciate you stepping up,” Carroll told Gennett. “Fresh blood is always good up here, fresh minds are even better.”

Avon’s next town council meeting will be July 8.
