EAGLE — Laura Genelin passed away in 2008 from colon cancer, and every year her friends and family gather to remember her in the most unique way. Join them this year for the sixth annual LG Tri in Eagle to remember Genelin.
“Time has flown by,” said Robye Nothnagel, organizer and founder of the LG Tri and friend of Laura Genelin. “Laura’s youngest children, twins, are about to be seniors in high school already.”
Laura Genelin was so passionate about participating in triathlons and this event “gets me out and ready for a healthy summer,” Nothnagel said.
On July 12, presenting sponsor Vail Valley Medical Center will help raise money for the Vail Valley Charitable Fund. In the past five years the LG Tri has raised thousands of dollars with a goal this year of raising another $10,000 to benefit locals in need. Since 1996, the Vail Valley Charitable Fund has provided assistance to Eagle County locals, like Laura Genelin, experiencing financial hardship due to a medical crisis or long-term illness.
After having 45 children participate in the first LG Kids Tri last year, Nothnagel and organizers are hoping to encourage more families to come out and participate together again this year.
“Swimming can be the biggest struggle for beginners that are looking to try their first triathlon,” Nothnagel said. “We really want to encourage kids who can already swim to come try. Most children, and even adults, can bike and run, but if they can swim then they already have an advantage.”
Making the swim less intimidating, participants will be swimming in the Eagle pool and are paired up with other swimmers at the same level.
After a 500-yard pool swim, a 12-mile bike leads participants up to Adams Rib Ranch following Brush Creek Road. The course ends with a 5-kilometer run though Eagle Ranch on the bike path, making it a great beginner course but challenging enough for anyone interested in competing in a fun local event. The kids’ races are shorter with three age groups: 6-7, 8-10 and 11-13.
