When you see a guy Saturday or Sunday walking slowly and reverently around a cherry 1964 Mustang and you spy what looks like a tear rolling down his cheek from behind his sunglasses, it isn’t. That’s excess awesomeness leaking out.
He’s at the fifth annual Wheels & Wings Show, an expo of awesomeness featuring classic cars, aircraft, motorcycles and two aerobatics shows.
That guy, and hundreds like him, are lovers of the classics: Motorized Mozart, Dual Exhaust Da Vinci, the Big Block Bach, the Tchaikovsky of Chrome and … you get the idea.
Saturday is the Wheels & Wings Show at the Vail Valley Jet Center in the Eagle County Regional Airport. Sunday is the Vail Automotive Classic in Vail Village, the events that celebrate the great American symphony that is the well-tuned V-8 engine.
The event is one of the most comprehensive auto, aircraft and motorcycle show in Western Colorado, featuring more than 250 cars, 100 motorcycles and 50 aircraft.
Saturday’s show features an open expo of cars, aircraft and motorcycles, plus two aerobatics shows.
The featured marque is the Porsche, which is good.
The 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang will also be celebrated, which is better.
“It’s hard to believe this will be the fifth year for this event,” said Doug Landin, chairman of the Vail Automotive Classic board of directors.
FROM A CLUB TO A SPECTACLE
The whole thing started with a bunch of local motorheads and classic car collectors getting together and showing off their cars. That grew to the local Cars & Coffee Club.
Five years ago, they put the word out that they wanted to start a big car show, and fellow motorheads rolled in from all over. The event now attracts around 3,000 people.
Saturday’s Wheels & Wings Show also includes airplane rides, an Eagle Chamber of Commerce beer tent and a children’s activity hangar.
Not all the action is on the ground. Buck Roetman, of Wild Horse Aviation, and Gary Rower, of Rower Airshows, will bring their Pitts/Stearman formation act back to the Wheels & Wings Show this year for two aerobatics shows at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.
Back this year is a VIP tent and viewing area to watch the aerobatics show, with all-day access to food, drinks and shade. Tickets for the VIP tent are $85 in advance and $100 at the gate, and include entry to the Wheels & Wings Show. Contact Allissa Hollis at 970-524-770, firstname.lastname@example.org, or visit www.vailautomotive classic.com for more information.
“The VIP tent offers the best seats in the house,” said Jamie Roosa, marketing director for the Vail Valley Jet Center.
Immediately following Saturday’s Wheels & Wings Show is the Vail Automotive Classic Auto Auction in Hangar 3. Vehicles are available at both reserve and non-reserve prices, and have been hand selected from car collectors and enthusiasts around the country, Landin said. Proceeds from certain items will benefit Jack’s Place at Shaw Regional Cancer Center and Eagle Valley Senior Life. Admission to the auction is free.
Sunday’s Vail Village car show runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and coincides with the Vail Farmers’ Market and Vail Oktoberfest. Sunday’s show includes a People’s Choice Award ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
