OAK CREEK— Why does it always seem to go to overtime in Soroco?

It’s one of life’s unsolvable mysteries.

While the Vail Christian community ponders that, the Saints boys basketball team can feel good about life after coming away with a 62-57 win — in overtime — at Soroco on Tuesday night. (Vail Christian beat the Rams, 83-78, in overtime up north last year.)

That’s 3-0 in the Gore League for Vail Christian, which includes two road wins in Hayden and Soroco, places that are usually not kind to those in blue, silver and white.

‘THAT WAS BIG’

While this portion of the article usually is devoted to Sug Ellsworth’s heroics, and there were plenty, give it up for fellow senior Cooper Gould. He had seven of the team’s 11 points during overtime.

“It was crazy. We went to overtime here last year, as well, so I had flashback from that,” Gould told the Steamboat Pilot. “That was big, against a big league opponent.”

As for Ellsworth, well, he had 24 points and 11 rebounds, aka another day at the office. (We’re still taking Gould over Ellsworth in match-play golf.)

Vail Christian never trailed, but because this is Soroco, the Rams’ Eric Logan hit a 3 with 11 seconds left in regulation, extending everyone’s stay in Oak Creek for four minutes.

Other notables were Ethan Pence and Logan Raitt, who had nine each.

“We bounced back,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “It was a resilient win.”

Meanwhile, the Vail Christian girls basketball team had a 25-16 lead at the half but fell to the Rams, 52-45. Jessie Hartley led the Saints with 20 points.

Both Saints teams head to DeBeque on Friday.
