Devils lax moves to 2-0 after beating Montrose

GYPSUM — So any one remember the last time Eagle Valley boys lacrosse opened the season 2-0?

That would be never.

The closest the Devils have ever gotten was the inaugural season of Eagle Valley lacrosse in 2009, when it beat Battle Mountain in the opener at the Eagle County Fairgrounds before turf came to our valley. Eagle Valley the lost to Aspen, dashing any hopes of 2-0 that year.

And so, the Devils are 2-0 after bouncing Montrose, 6-1, on Saturday in Gypsum. The Devils went 3-12 last season, so things are looking a lot better in Eagle Valley’s camp this year.

One of the nice aspects of the team’s quick start is the play in the defensive end, spearheaded by Finn Bloomquist, Griffen Lay and Zach Carvill.

“I think they had a really good game,” coach Bobby Ecker said. “They were aggressive.”

So far, Eagle Valley, also with the help of netminder Joe Sheldon, has allowed two goals in two games. It’s a very simple axiom of sports — if the other team can’t score, you’re tough to beat.

Jared Salaz had a hat trick against the Indians, while freshman Zach Booth had his first varsity goal. The team’s captains, Zach Booth and Mike Ramunno, also chipped in with markers.

“I think today we looked a lot more composed. We didn’t have the jitters,” Ecker said, comparing his team’s performance on Saturday, as opposed to the opener on Friday against Telluride. “We were able to possess the ball well.”

After two home games, the Devils hit the road, heading over the pass to play Summit County. The Devils lost to the Tigers, 8-6, last year, so they’ll be looking for payback.
