EDWARDS — And now a rarity.

Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley girls lacrosse went at it on Friday, and both teams came away happy. The Huskies won, 10-4, so there was much rejoicing. Meanwhile, the Devils looked much improved, so there was much rejoicing.

“It’s very exciting. If you look at last year, I don’t think we even scored on Battle Mountain,” Devils coach Stephanie Renzelman said. “Serious improvement, so that’s good to see.”

Renzelman played lacrosse at Eagle Valley during her time, and is correct about the stats. Battle Mountain outscored Eagle Valley, 34-0, last season. Friday was something upon which to build for the Devils.

The Huskies’ Marti Schmidt and Devils’ Abby Jewitt traded goals early before Battle Mountain ran off the next seven goals, putting things out of reach.

For Battle Mountain, it’s the team’s first win of the season after a tough opening outing against Cherokee Trail, an 11-5 loss. And, the timing is good since the Huskies host Aspen today.

Battle Mountain is definitely a different team after last spring’s graduation — Maddi Conlin and Clare Baker alone combined for 84 goals last season — but the ladies are adjusting and establishing a new identity.

“I think we’re working well,” now senior Mabry Gentry said. “We have a lot of freshmen. We do a little tradition where we have big buddies and little buddies — a senior takes on a freshman. We’re connecting more and teaching.”

The cupboard was not left entirely bare. Gentry had a hat trick. Anna Trombetta’s still there dishing as always with one goal and four assists. Veteran Ciara Heiden also had a marker. Newcomers Schmidt and Lindsey Sierent each had two scores.

And, as far as the “old guard” goes, Siena Miller remains tough as ever between the pipes. In fact, the goaltending for both teams was excellent. The Devils’ Erin Keeney had 20 saves.

Huskies Face Aspen Next

Battle Mountain hosts Aspen today at 4 p.m. Though officially a nonconference game, there’s plenty of motivation. The Skiers beat the Huskies 14-13 in overtime and 11-9 last season, losses that kept Battle Mountain out of the state playoffs.

Eagle Valley has its home opener on Monday against Fruita Monument.
