Documentary screens Friday in Beaver Creek

BEAVER CREEK — The Vail Valley Foundation’s Youth Foundation presents “The Mask You Live In” Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Beaver Creek’s Vilar Performing Arts Center. The special PG-13 screening is presented by Girl PowHER, a gender-specific project of the Youth Foundation. General admission tickets are on sale now for $20, or for $10 more, you can sponsor a student’s ticket which allows high school and middle school students to watch this impactful movie for free.

“The Mask You Live In” follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January.

The documentary presents the personal narratives of young boys and men and features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media, further exploring how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class and circumstance. “The Mask You Live In” ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

“Just as our culture has harmed women and girls, so too are we harming our boys, which has led to a ‘boy crisis’ in America,” Newsom said. “Our intention is that this film sparks a national conversation around masculinity and helps our boys overcome limiting stereotypes, encouraging them to stay true to themselves.”

Newsom’s first film, “Miss Representation,” premiered in Beaver Creek in 2011 and exposed the ways in which mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence.

“The Youth Foundation is proud of what Girl PowHER has accomplished in empowering girls and young women in our community, but we also know there is another side to the equation,” said Melisa Rewold-Thuon, vice president of education for the Youth Foundation. “Boys and young men face many challenges throughout their adolescence and we are hoping to shed a little bit of light on this issue through this film screening.”
