Special to the Daily |

The season’s over and it’s just begun.

It’s the beauty of baseball in the mountains. The high school season is over, but the club season is just beginning. And a lot of local players will be heading into the summer season with all-league honors to their credit.

Devils

Eagle Valley had three first-team selections — Wade Ticer, Harrison Stevens and Eric Boyd.

Ticer pitched and manned first base. On the mound, Ticer sported a 3.82 ERA in the ever-hitter-friendly Western Slope and fanned a team-high 48 batters. Eagle Valley manager Jesse Meryhew didn’t have to DH for Ticer because he hit a cool .459 with three homers and 26 RBI.

Ticer’s next stop is Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, where he will continue to play.

Stevens is off to Colby Community College in Kansas, and that means he may see a familiar face. Colby plays in the same conference at Butler Community College, home to one Travis Edgar. You may remember the latter as Eagle Valley, Class of 2014. We expect Edgar (3-1 with a 4.45 ERA with the Grizzlies this spring) to brush back Stevens, and for Stevens to charge the mound.

OK, back to Stevens, his main role was leading off, and all he did was get on base. He hit .522 and had a .590 on-base percentage. Not too shabby.

Eric Boyd, the team’s catcher, is heading to Trinidad State Community College. With catchers, defense and handling the staff are the first priorities, and he did them well. Boyd also hit .439 with 3 long balls and 19 RBI.

On the honorable-mention rolls, the Devils have second-baseman Slater Sabo (Ohio Wesleyan), shortstop Sug Ellsworth (possibly walking on at Creighton) and junior Oscar Gallegos.

Huskies

And Battle Mountain baseball actually has all-leaguers because the Huskies won some games.

Pitcher Sean Weller is on the first team. The junior was the staff ace with an impressive walks-to-strikeout ratio of 18 free passes and 79 punchouts in 67 innings pitched.

Junior Jake Singleton made honorable mention, leading the Huskies regulars with a .356 batting average.
