Edwards Spur Road design work begins

EDWARDS — Eagle County and the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin the design process for the second phase of the Interstate 70 interchange upgrade project in Edwards with a public meeting Thursday.

The project will encompass roadway improvements along the Edwards Spur Road from Miller Ranch Road to U.S. Highway 6, including the intersection. The first meeting of the project leadership team, comprised of transportation experts and community stakeholders, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Eagle County Building. The meeting is open to the public.

PUBLIC OUTREACH

The design effort will follow transportation department’s I-70 Mountain Corridor Context Sensitive Solutions process, which incorporates public outreach and open houses to solicit input. Interested community members are encouraged to contact Eagle County Engineer Eva Wilson at eva.wilson@eaglecounty.us to be added to the project email list. In addition, a schedule of public meetings will be posted to http://www.eaglecounty.us once finalized. Information gathered at these meetings will be incorporated into the development and evaluation of design alternatives.

Outcomes from the design process will include traffic analysis, environmental clearances and final construction plans for Phase II. The effort is being funded through $250,000 in Eagle County road impact fees and $250,000 from the Edwards Community Authority, to match a $500,000 contribution from the state.

Phase I of the Edwards interchange project was completed in 2011 and included four roundabouts between Berry Creek Road and Miller Ranch Road. Final cost for the design, construction plans, environmental clearances and right-of-way acquisitions for Phase I totaled just more than $1 million, which included a $340,000 contribution from Eagle County, $340,000 from the Edwards Community Authority and $335,000 from the state. The project was built with $9.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.
