AVON — AVON – Firefighters contained a blaze to a single apartment late Thursday, leaving one man with potential burn injuries.

Around 9 a.m. a call came in reporting a structure fire on Nottingham Road in Avon. Firefighters arrived moments later to find that the roof and an upper floor in a second floor apartment in Avon’s Bristol Pines condominium complex were on fire.

The building was evacuated and about 25 minutes later firefighters had the blaze under control, said Tracy LeClair, public information officer with the Eagle River Fire Protection District.

One man was transported to the Vail Valley Medical Center. There were no other injuries reported, LeClair said.

Residents were allowed back in their homes around 11 p.m.

ERFPD Fire Chief Karl Bauer praised the quick knockdown of what could easily have been a complete loss of multiple units.

“When engine companies are adequately staffed, well-trained and properly equipped, the likelihood of quickly stopping a fire is significantly increased,” Bauer said. “While we never want to see injuries or property damage, the crews’ ability to alter the outcome of what could have been a much more serious situation is a testament to their level of preparedness.”

The ERFPD’s Engine 7, Engine 12, Engine 5, Tower 15, Engine 11 & Battalion 7 were initially dispatched. Vail Fire & Emergency Services, Eagle County Paramedic Services , Avon Police Department , Colorado State Patrol , Vail Public Safety Communications Center, Gypsum Fire Protection District and the Vail Valley Salvation Army also responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, LeClair said.
