GYPSUM — As a public-service announcement, we remind you that 4A Western Slope soccer teams play each other twice in a season.

And Eagle Valley can take consolation in that after Glenwood Springs came away with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Devils on Thursday night at Gypsum’s John Ramunno Field.

“I don’t know,” senior Cameron Horning said of his game-winner in the 94th minute. “That was my only shot of the game.”

And that was the story of the game on Thursday. Eagle Valley had every chance to win it with a plethora of scoring chances, but the Demons were extremely efficient with theirs.

“The guys played really well and they moved the ball,” Eagle Valley coach Bratzo Horruitiner said. “They did everything we asked them to do in the preseason. They played really smart. I think we outplayed them, but they scored.”

The Devils head down to Glenwood on Sept. 17.

Finding a way

Eagle Valley (0-1) had shots on the goal, over the goal, to the left and right of the goal and under the goal if that was possible, but could not convert.

And after a scoreless first half, the visiting Demons got on the board in the 53rd when Horning assisted Will Osier for a 1-0 lead. (If Horning is a familiar name for local sports fans, then you know him from basketball.)

The Devils pressed forward and found a beauty of an equalizer on a corner kick from Noel Ruiz. Alex Torres missed his first shot, but corralled the rebound and used a half-cycle kick to put it into the back of the net.

Despite all the momentum swinging Eagle Valley’s way, Glenwood found a way. Perhaps it’s a little karma from last season — the Demons lost three one-goal games last season to eventual league champion Summit County (twice) and to Steamboat Springs.

“It helps a lot,” Horning said. “We got off to slow start last year, and I think we’re going to do a lot better this year. I think we’re more mature this year. We all play well together.”

And it was only appropriate that the assist on Horning’s goal came from a defender Camilo Landa.

Lots of soccer ahead

Keeping perspective for Eagle Valley, which entered the season with high expectations, is key. There are still 14 games to go. Glenwood Springs (1-0) hosts Steamboat Springs on Saturday at 11 a.m. in what’s always a big game.

Eagle Valley hosts Coal Ridge on Tuesday in nonconference action at 6 p.m. The Devils’ next Slope opponent was pretty apparent on Thursday night with David Cope and a good portion of Battle Mountain’s team in the stands.

The Huskies will call on the Devils on Thursday.
