EDWARDS — Turnabout is fair play.

Battle Mountain football wrecked Moffat County’s homecoming with a 41-27 win up in Craig last year. Friday night, the Bulldogs returned the favor with a 24-7 win over the Huskies during their festivities.

Battle Mountain football faced not only a tough Bulldogs team, but a howling wind during the first half that made just about every play precarious.

Battle Mountain got off to a good start, recovering a botched punt snap from Moffat County. That gave the Huskies the ball on the Bulldogs’ 12.

Battle Mountain quarterback Demetrius Parrish raced for seven yards and Wyatt Harwood got another three. Parrish roared in from three yards out and the Huskies led, 7-0.

As the rain and wind was picking up, Moffat had a poor pitch on its next possession. Chance Archuleta jumped all over the fumble and the Huskies were in business on the Moffat 21.

Battle Mountain got the ball down to the 8-yardline before a bad snap — the wind was roaring and the rain falling sideways — stalled the drive. The Huskies sent Chase Keep out to attempt a 46-yard field goal, but that was blocked.

Moffat’s Double-Wing

Moffat finally got its double-wing going, spurred by a 32-yard run from Eddie Smercina. Quarterback Keenan Hildebrandt also ripped off an 18-yard gain. That set up Tory Roberts for a 3-yard touchdown plunge. The Bulldogs messed up the snap on the point after, leaving the Huskies with a 7-6 lead.

The Bulldogs took the lead on a 40-yard scamper by Dominc Pascetti, but missed the 2-point conversion. Moffat was 0-for-4 on PATs and conversions.

In the meantime, Battle Mountain’s offense struggled to find diversity with running back Wyatt Harwood, who was injured two weeks ago at Steamboat Springs. Harwood gamely played, but couldn’t run. And that left Parrish as the Huskies’ only weapon.

Parrish is quick and elusive, but it’s hard for anyone to pick up yardage when the opposing defense is packing all 11 defenders in the box, as Moffat did for most of the game.

The Huskies couldn’t get anything going offensively and the Bulldogs eventually wore down the Battle Mountain defense.

The Huskies’ defense seemed to back the Bulldogs into a hole with a first-and-20 on their own 33. Roberts managed only a 2-yard gain on the next play but the Huskies were flagged for an untimely personal foul.

That gave Moffat new life and the Bulldogs obliged. Hildebrandt raced 36 yards for a touchdown and an 18-7 lead. Moffat County ran out the clock from there, also adding a touchdown.

Battle Mountain, 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the 2A Slope North, will try to bounce back next week at Roaring Fork.
