EAGLE — The way Beverly Barnes sees it, there are really only three types of wine — wine you like, wine you don’t like and wine that is free.

That’s a refreshing mantra because, as we all know, people can get downright snooty when it comes to vintages and varieties. But Barnes’ thoughts about wine also signal that the new liquor store in Eagle intends to live up to its motto — buy big, sell low and have fun.

Boone’s Wine and Spirits opened its doors last week. It’s not hard to spot the new operation. It is located in the commercial center on the north side of Market Street, on the way to City Market. It is the new incarnation of the former Eagle Liquor Mart, in about three times the floor space, envisioned by owners Beverly Barnes and Geoff Moser.

Barnes and Moser figure their staff has more than 100 yeas of wine, beer and spirits sales experience. Additionally there are five sommeliers working at Boone’s.

With a space that is about triple the size of their former operation, the Boone’s team hopes their selection will roughly triple as well. In addition to their beer, wine and spirit offerings, the new space features an adult-beverage accessory aisle that includes everything from corkscrews to gift bags as well as a tasting room alcove situated in a sunny corner. The tasting room has a small library aimed at helping customers find what they need as well as a ceiling-to-floor chalkboard where staff and community members can make beverage recommendations.

“We will be specializing in customer service. We are still your locally owned and operated liquor store, just with a larger selection,” said Moser.

Taste of something special

As Boone’s settles into its space, Barnes said she is excited about launching the store’s tasting room program.

“We have a list of vendors and reps who want to sign up for every available time,” she said. Additionally, Boones will offer its own tasting schedule as allowed by state regulations. Barnes envisions inviting chefs to present classes about pairing wine with food or cooking with beer or other culinary/alcohol partnerships.

Moser and Barnes noted that many professionals who work in the ski resort food and beverage industry actually live in the Eagle community. That means Boone’s customers will have high standards for their beer, wine and spirits and the store’s team pledged that they will work to meet the needs of both educated palates and regular folks.
