Battle Mountain boys stay hot; win at Glenwood

The way Battle Mountain boys basketball has been going, the Huskies should just play another game today.

“To be honest, I think we need a break,” Huskies coach Phil Tronsrue joked.

Battle Mountain has certainly earned a rest after finishing a stretch of three games in three days with an emphatic exclamation point in a 60-50 win at Glenwood Springs on Saturday.

“I told the guys before the game that this was a measuring stick,” Tronsrue said. “We’ve talked about Eagle Valley, Delta and Summit, but we also need to beat teams above us in the standings. This gives us some validation.”

And don’t look now, but the Huskies (9-7) are creeping up in the Slope. Rifle’s 10-0, and three games up on everyone in the loss column. Glenwood (6-3), Palisade (6-3) and Battle Mountain (6-4) follow.

What’s more the Huskies finish the season with their final four league games in the friendly confines.

The key to beating Glenwood is to make sure the Demons’ Cameron Horning doesn’t go crazy. Thanks to Demetrius Parrish, Horning was held to a pedestrian 18 points. Horning put up 31 points in the first meeting of the year between the two teams.

“We just had him face guard him all night,” Tronsrue said of Parrish, aka D.

Speaking of Ds, Devin Huffman is starting to look more and more comfortable on the court. The sophomore had 24 points and 12 rebounds against the Demons. Miles Joersz had 11 points and Jack Skidmore finished with nine.

Battle Mountain has Summit on Thursday in Edwards, followed by a big visit from Palisade on Friday.

“We’ve had two great weeks with five good games,” Tronsrue said. “We have four more games to finish out and everything’s at home. We are feeling good, but we have to make sure that doesn’t take control of us. We need to have three good days of practice before Summit and Palisade.”

Huskies girls win

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — What a difference 24 hours makes.

After a heart-breaking 60-59 loss on Friday night against Delta, Battle Mountain girls basketball bounced back with a 54-41 win at Glenwood Springs on Saturday.

“The thing about it was that we finished on both ends,” Huskies coach Paul Stevens said. “We played a pretty complete game tonight.”

Monique Stevens had 15 points and Claire Kruger had 14 points, while Jessica Sullivan finished with nine points and 15 rebounds.

Battle Mountain (5-10 overall and 3-7) is still alive in the district chase.

“We not worrying about that,” coach Stevens said. “If it happens, it happens. We need to play.”

The Huskies are at Summit on Thursday.

Saints sweep at Hayden

HAYDEN — That’s twice as nice.

Vail Christian basketball went 2-for-2 in Hayden on Saturday.

The ladies downed the Tigers 53-35 behind 22 points from Jessie Hartley.

Is Vail Christian (9-4 overall and 5-2 in the Gore) surging?

“This is great momentum for the second half,” coach Beth Raitt said. “We’re starting to understand who we are, but I don’t think we have peaked yet.”

The Saints boys won the nightcap, 53-19, with Logan Raitt leading the way with 12 points. And if anyone’s interested, Soroco beat West Grand, 39-33. No scoreboard watching is allowed, just like the Saints (9-4, 6-1) aren’t young.

Vail Christian’s teams head to Plateau Valley on Friday for a nonconference game before hosting South Park on Saturday.
