With no eyes on thingamajig, Saints beat Moffat

CRAIG — Don’t say it.

Really, please no talking about it.

Sure, it would be nice to go to the 2A state thingamajig, but even after four wins in a row, including a 2-1 win at Moffat County on Tuesday, Vail Christian soccer is not thinking about the thingamajig. (It rhymes with layoffs, if you’re confused.)

“We’re not focusing on that,” Saints coach Lauren Mutter said. “It’s game by game. Our No. 1 focus in Thursday, then it’s Monday, then it’s Thursday and Friday.”

Mutter isn’t just rattling off days of the week. Vail Christian has four more games in the next nine days.

For the second time in as many games, the Saints scored off a sett piece, always a good sign. Susan Vanderveer fed Abby Bossow on a corner kick. Jessie Raitt also scored because it seems like that’s a school rule, be it basketball or soccer.

The Saints (4-4) did all of this during the first half, when the conditions were not exactly ideal up in Craig.

“Oh my gosh, it was awful,” Mutter said. “It was raining, hailing and snowing for the first half.”

That, of course, seems to be Saints’ weather. Vail Christian has been dealing with this all winter, er, spring.

Thursday’s game against Grand Valley theoretically was the regular-season finale when the season started, but three make-ups next week have dashed that concept. Nonetheless, the 3 p.m. kickoff at Freedom Park in Edwards remains an important game to get over .500, not to mention it’s time for some home cooking.

Huskies lax loses

LOVELAND — Battle Mountain boys lacrosse fell to Thompson Valley, 16-6, Monday, in nonconference play.

Before anyone jumps off a ledge, it was a nonconference game and Thompson Valley (No. 9) was the latest of the top-10 teams the Huskies have played this year. Most importantly, Battle Mountain still controls its own postseason destiny within the Mountain Conference. If the Huskies beat Glenwood Springs next week, they’re going to the league-title game.

In the meantime, the Huskies (5-6) head to Evergreen today for another nonconference tussle.
