EAGLE-VAIL — There won’t be any “HAHA” or “LOL” if the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office catches the person involved in criminal mischief incidents involving graffiti during the past year.

“Basically to us, they look like they’re from the same person because we’re finding the same style, colors and words in various places,” said Amber Mulson-Barrett, of the Sheriff’s Office.

Most of the graffiti occurred on Colorado Department of Transportation and Union Pacific property along U.S. Highway 6.

The vandalism primarily includes bring pink, green, blue and purple colors with the words “MEMO,” “ME,” “HAHA,” “LOL” and “FUTUREFUTUREFUTURE,” among other things.

Damages to underpasses, electric boxes, pillars and tracks are visible. The total estimated costs are still being assessed.

The Sheriff’s Office has used inmates doing community service to paint over most of the graffiti, but some of the areas are hard to reach, Mulson-Barrett said.

With the Colorado Department of Transportation and Union Pacific wanting to press charges, the Sheriff’s Office has documented all of the vandalism and are increasing patrol in the areas to try and catch the culprit in the act.

“Graffiti breeds more graffiti,” Mulson-Barrett said. “It’s just a bad image for our community. It’s not something we tolerate up here.”
