Eagle County Health Service District boss is retiring

EDWARDS — Eagle County Health Service District has announced that longtime CEO Fred Morrison will retire on Sunday.

Morrison began his career in New Mexico in 1979 as a firefighter and first responder. He moved to the Vail area in 1986 but left briefly to attend Colorado State University, where he received his bachelors in business administration in 1991.

Morrison was hired by Eagle County Ambulance District in 1993 as an EMT and became a paramedic in 1994 after attending the Swedish Medical Center Paramedic program.

Morrison treated thousands of patients throughout his career and impacted many lives. Even after all of the thousands of patients he has treated, his favorite call was his first one as a paramedic — he helped with the delivery of premature twins.

During his tenure, he served as an emergency medical technician, paramedic, paramedic supervisor, operations manager and finally CEO.

Valuable contributor

During his career in Eagle County, Morrison served on many boards including the Emergency 911 Authority, a governor-appointed member of the State Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Council including serving as chairman of that council, the Eagle County Public Safety Council, the Eagle County Emergency Responders Fund and The Paramedic Foundation.

Morrison also worked as a staff member at all three FIS Alpine World Ski Championships as a unified incident commander. He started and successfully advocated for a critical care paramedic license in the state of Colorado. During his final three years with Eagle County Health Service District, he helped successfully merge with Western Eagle County Ambulance District.

Legacy left

“I will miss Fred as a mentor and boss. He has taught me much about leadership and organization, and we wish him the best of luck in retirement,” said Christopher Montera, interim CEO.

Jeff Babb, president of the Health Service District, said, “Fred has been an excellent manager and leader of this organization. We are very proud of his accomplishments during his 23-year career here at the paramedic service.”

Fred also oversaw the construction of an Avon ambulance station, a new mountain rescue facility and the remodel of Edwards station.

Morrison said he plans to enjoy more golf, some long motorcycle rides and maybe even a dive trip or two.
