6 pull nomination petitions for Vail Town Council positions
September 25, 2013
What’s the deadline?
Nomination petitions with at least 10 signatures of registered Vail voters are due at the Vail Town Clerk’s office by Oct. 4. If you circulate a petition, it’s a good idea to return it a couple of days early. To learn more, call 970-479-2136.
VAIL — With less than two weeks until the deadline, six people have asked for nomination petitions for the Nov. 5 election for Vail Town Council. We just don’t know who they are.
Vail Town Clerk Tammy Nagel said people circulating petitions don’t have to reveal their names since a friend or neighbor can pick up a petition for a prospective candidate. Once Nagel certifies a petition as valid, the town will release a candidate’s name.
There will be at least two new council members elected Nov. 5. Current council member Kevin Foley is ineligible to run again due to term limits. Kerry Donovan is turning down a chance to run for a second council term so she can focus on a 2014 run for a seat in the Colorado Senate.
Incumbent Greg Moffet, elected in 2011, recently indicated he’s running again. Fellow incumbent Susie Tjossem said she’s picked up a petition, but family matters beyond her control may make a campaign difficult.
While Oct. 4 is the deadline for submitting petitions to the town clerk’s office, Nagel had a couple of recommendations.
The main recommendation is to get more signatures than necessary. Only 10 signatures are required to put a candidate on the Town Council ballot, but Nagel said it’s better to have 20 names or so, just to make sure enough valid signatures have been received.
After receiving the petitions, Nagel will check the list of registered voters to ensure signatures are valid. Moreover, the same petition-signer’s name is valid only on the first four petitions received. That means a Vail resident might sign every petition, but that signature will only be valid on the first four that come into the clerk’s office.
Nagel said she expects to have the final candidate list by either Oct. 4 or Oct. 7.
