High Altitude Society column: St. Clare School Charity Golf Challenge

A little rain did not keep the diehard golfers away from the St. Clare of Assisi School Charity Golf Challenge at the Sonnenalp Golf Club on Monday. The greens were getting some moisture that, along with the abundant sunshine as of late, will make for some gorgeous verdant links. Thirty or so players had a 10 a.m. shotgun start, and by late afternoon some folks were quite chilled to the core. A foursome of women, including Carmel McGuckin, Shelly Shanley, Megan Green and Sandra Lynch, were well prepared and looked smashing in their 1980s one-piece ski suits; a brilliant idea for a rainy day of golf.

After 18 holes on the Sonnenalp golf course, the group celebrated at Balata Restaurant, where they were joined by the St. Clare community. There were prizes for the first- and second-place foursomes in men’s, women’s and mixed categories as well as the longest drive and putt for men and women. Joanie Sego’s team was a winner, and Kelli Brausch rocked it as well. A raffle had winners psyched for ziplining, a hot air champagne balloon ride for two, paragliding for two, golf foursomes, spa getaways and restaurant and lodging certificates. Funds raised from the tournament support St. Clare Catholic School’s Tuition Aid Program.

A fun addition to the afternoon this year was a fashion show featuring St. Clare students who modeled new uniforms for the 2013-14 school year. A committee chose to return to the original purple and green colors that St. Clare School had when it opened its doors in 2001. First grade teacher Annie Schmidt reminded the group, “The color purple represents the purple mountains majesty of where we live and the holy color of the church.”

Event organizer Rob Rothenberg worked many long hours to pull together a great tournament. “I just want to thank all of our sponsors and donors, especially ANB Bank and the Lynch Family for making this tournament happen,” Rothenberg said.
