VAIL — Last summer, three young women rode the gondola for a few hours because it seemed like a good idea.
“We had been riding it last year for a couple hours and someone asked, ‘Are you trying to break the record?’” recalled Paige Pritchard.
“We asked, ‘There’s a record?’”
Yes there is, and they now have it.
Pritchard, cousin Hannah Scheid and lifelong friend Kaily Hauck spent six hours on the Eagle Bahn gondola in Lionshead.
The record was 12 round trips and they finished 14, finally calling it quits around 4 p.m. A round trip on the Lionshead gondola is 17 minutes up and 17 minutes down.
They were finishing their 14th descent when we called them on the last cell phone with any power left.
“Paige and I like to do random things,” Hannah said. Most of the time we’re in these sorts of things together. We’re partners in crime,” Paige said.
They did sit ups and about anything to stay alert. They brought food and nail polish and makeup. They made playing cards from napkins by ripping them up and drawing on them.
Local Joe’s pizza delivered a pie to the gondola, and handed it over when they were rounding the base and headed back up.
“The view is beautiful, but it after seeing it 14 times, we were ready to look at something else,” Hannah said.
Hannah and Kaily are cousins. Paige is a buddy they met out here when they were toddlers. They both have grandparents who own units in The Lodge at Lionshead, so it makes it pretty easy to get together for various adventures.
Hannah Schied, 14, lives in Annapolis, Md. Paige Pritchard, 14, lives in Kansas City, Kan. Kaily Hauck, 15, lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
“It’s on Hannah’s bucket list of stuff to get done before the summer is gone,” said Jenn Scheid, Hannah’s mom.
