Freedom Park lot in Edwards to be paved next summer

EAGLE — There is a lot to be done in Edwards in terms of parking, sidewalks and lighting.

Eagle County commissioners met with staff and Edwards Community Authority Administrator Ken Marchetti on earlier this month to consider priorities, funding and timelines for the various projects.

The one project that is already lined up is the parking lot at Freedom Park. The gravel lot is heavily used and commissioners agreed it is time to pave it and create some organized parking there for the sake of upkeep and pedestrian safety. The lot is next to the Western Eagle County Metropolitan District Field House. The project will cost $643,000.

“We will gather input from the public and WECMRD during the design phase this fall and construction will start next summer,” said Eagle County Engineer Ben Gerdes.

In the past, commissioners have questioned if a paved lot would affect future development on land the county owns on the west side of the lot.

“It won’t,” Gerdes said.

Regarding pedestrian connectivity projects, Gerdes said Edwards Access Road from Riverwalk to Miller Ranch Road is top priority on a list of 12 projects that were identified:

• Edwards Access Road: Riverwalk to Miller Ranch Road.

• Freedom Park parking lot.

• Lake Creek Village Boulevard.

• Edwards Access Road: U.S. Highway 6 to Eagle River.

• Beard Creek Road: To Moonridge Drive.

• Regional trail realignment: Brett Ranch to Edwards Plaza.

• Miller Ranch Road: North side, school roundabout to Edwards Access Road.

• Freedom Park/Colorado Mountain College connection.

• Edwards Village Boulevard: Edwards Corner to Homestead Drive.

• Highway 6: Mobile home park to St. Francis.

• Highway 6: Edwards Access Road intersection to mobile home park.

• Highway 6: Edwards Access Road intersection to Bull Run.
