What goods or services do you provide? Fresh, locally-made ice cream delivered to your home or office. Scoop Vail also offers catering for birthday parties, events and ice cream socials.
What’s new or exciting at your place? It’s a totally new concept, and I have all the freedom of flavor creation. Ever had root beer ice cream? I’ve made it, and it is way better than any root beer float.
What strategy do you use to differentiate your business from your competition? Fresh, locally-made ice cream delivered to your door! Who does that? No one else, and it’s free delivery with an order of at least two pints. The cost is just $5.50 a pint. Orders also get a small bag of sprinkles with each pint.
I plan on announcing future flavor names that reflect life in the Vail Valley and Colorado.
What philosophy do you follow in dealing with your customers? What can your customers expect from you? I think of all my customers as true supporters of my small business. Without them, I have no business, so I make sure to treat them right. I haven’t been more than a minute late during any of my deliveries so far. I’m also very accessible and always respond to texts or voicemails as soon as I can.
Tell us a little about your background, education and experience: I am a Chicago transplant who fell in love with the Vail Valley when I came here skiing annually on vacation as a child. Naturally, I felt I had to move here to become a ski instructor, which I am at Beaver Creek.
I have worked several jobs at restaurants, hotels and hostels in the food and beverage industry. This is my first business in the ice cream industry, but I’ve always enjoyed starting my own businesses.
My first venture as a child was a lemonade stands in my front yard. Then I moved on to selling used golf balls at age 10 in garage sales, and later I began selling items on eBay.
After that it was snow removal and, most recently, in high school and college, I ran an exterior painting company.
I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a hospitality administration degree in May 2012. Considering the economy’s current state and unpredictable future, I always knew I’d have a job if I ran my own business. I also think it’s important for kids and young adults to learn about and pursue entrepreneurship.
What is the most humorous thing that has happened at your business since you opened? My parents’ reaction is probably the most humorous event for my business.
When I first came up with the idea for the business and called them in excitement in January, they told me I should just wait tables if I wanted to make extra money.
Once I showed them how serious I was, they planned a trip to be here when I opened. My father’s words before heading back were, “Well, it looks like you’ve got it all figured out.”
