Meeting launches discussion about Dotsero incorporation

EAGLE — Frustrated by Eagle County’s land use processes and concerned about costs that could be associated with annexation to Gypsum, Dotsero business owner Josh Farmer is calling on his neighbors to seek if they are interested in incorporating as a town.

“This is really a first step. We are just trying to get some people talking about it,” said Farmer.

In that spirit, he has organized a community meeting for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Two Rivers Community Center. Dotsero’s approximately 700 residents are all welcome to attend.

Farmer, the owner of All Nation’s Management Storage in Dotsero, is also a U-Haul dealer and the manager of Dotsero Self Storage. He noted that his own business development plan is proceeding through the county process, but he is concerned that other commercial ventures proposed in Dotsero will not share that fate.

“We have been stymied by the county. We really can’t develop anything down here,” he said.

Farmer noted that there are infrastructure needs — notably water and wastewater treatment and transmission line issues — to be addressed if Dotsero proceeds with an incorporation action. However, he questions the assertion that the community’s tax base is insufficient to support a municipal government. Farmer said if Dotsero becomes a town, sales tax revenues could support operations and allow the community residents a greater say about development options.

“We know that we are the entry to this county,” said Farmer. “We want to make the town look good and function well.”
