Indoor soccer day benefits family of influenza victim

EDWARDS — The instinct to help runs strong in this valley. This week, it’s the people associated with the Battle Mountain High School soccer team.

When Veronica Moreno Castillo died of the flu Dec. 28, she left a grieving husband and three children. The oldest of the kids, Aldo Moreno, is a friend of several members of Battle Mountain’s soccer team. That led to an idea for an “Indoor Soccer Bonanza,” set for Saturday at the Battle Mountain gymnasiums.

“Our kids love to play, so we thought we’d combine that with raising some money and to visibly show support for Aldo and his family.”

Having the event will also allow family members to come and go, said Battle Mountain soccer coach Dave Cope.

Cope said three indoor fields will be running during the event, set to run between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Most of the play will simply be pick-up games, giving people a chance to play a lot.

Sweet Treats on Sale

Besides a chance for a day of indoor play, organizers will also hold a bake sale. That, and the $10 price of admission, could raise some needed cash for the family.

“We’ve told (the family) they don’t have to be there all day,” Cope said. “We want to do something to help, but didn’t want to violate their privacy.”

The bake sale may come in handy for participants, since Cope said he expects a lot of people to just socialize on the sidelines — that’s what happens during most indoor-soccer days.

That time to socialize will be good for the family and friends, giving them a chance to just get together in a relaxed setting and have a little fun. It’ll also be a good chance for the Battle Mountain soccer family to get together after a couple of jarring losses in the past several weeks.

“We’ve had one family lose a son (Tony Seibert) and another family lose a mother,” Cope said, adding it will be good to have the common bond of the team to help ease some of that shared grief.
