Eagle County highway cleanup set for this weekend

Editor’s note: This column submitted by Vail Resorts showcases the nonprofits that the company supports through its Vail Resorts Echo program.

AVON — The Eagle River Watershed Council works hard to keep the water in our valley clean and plentiful. Besides collecting water quality data in the valley, the Watershed Council teaches about 450 children each year the importance of healthy rivers, reaches adults with a Vail Daily column, runs programs such as its monthly Watershed Wednesday, orchestrates scientific assessments of the health of our local rivers and coordinates river restoration projects.

The Watershed Council is perhaps most recognized for coordinating the annual Community Pride Highway Cleanup every spring and the Eagle River Cleanup each fall which boasts about 950 and 350 volunteers, respectively.

The Highway Cleanup started in 1999 with just a $400 budget and a group of locals with a vision of a cleaner valley. The individuals include Bob Moroney, Caroline Bradford, Doug Cogswell, Polly Letofsky and Evelyn Piney.

Vail Resorts Echo has been a sponsor, in some capacity, since the beginning and in recent years, we have been thrilled to have them as the presenting sponsor! In addition to their monetary donation, Vail Resorts provides the venue and the food for the 700-plus volunteers that attend the thank-you barbecue. And the Arrowhead Alpine Club members jump in to serve up that tasty grub.

The two annual cleanups are popular because of the sense of community that they build, and a big part of that comes from the thank-you barbecue. The Eagle River Watershed Council’s volunteers enjoy live music, food and a gift, in large part thanks to the support of Vail Resorts Echo and other sponsors. To join the 14th annual Community Pride Highway Cleanup on Saturday, call 970-827-5406 or visit erwc.org.
