Vail Honeywagon opens Avon recycling center

AVON — Vail Honeywagon has opened a new recycling center, located on the corner of Nottingham Ranch Road, between Walmart and U.S. Highway 6.

The recycling center will function similar to other county recycling sites in that anyone can take paper, commingled items (glass, plastic, aluminum) and flattened cardboard to the designated bins to be recycled free of charge. What sets this site apart from others in Eagle County is that it has a long-term goal to be a centralized recycling hub where community members can bring various hard-to-recycle materials for a nominal fee.

“There are a lot of things that go into our local landfill that could be recycled — things like yard waste, mattresses, scrap metal and other things that can’t go in the bins provided by the county — there just hasn’t been any local options for places to take them. Most people don’t want to drive all the way to Wolcott just to get rid of an old TV or a bucket of paint, and they shouldn’t have to,” Honeywagon sustainability director Shawn Bruckman said.

“We are excited to offer this new amenity to the community. The intent is for this site to act as a collection site and as an educational space for people to learn more about recycling.”

FUTURE PLANS

The Vail Honeywagon Recycle Center opened Tuesday with basic recycle drop-site bins at first. Future plans include collection of e-waste, some hazardous household waste (batteries, light bulbs, paint, etc), organic waste, and other hard to recycle materials. Additional recycling options are expected to roll out gradually during the next few months.

Vail Honeywagon owner Matt Donovan is encouraging the community to take advantage of all of the benefits this new site has to offer.

“We are excited to offer this new amenity to the community,” Donovan said. “The intent is for this site to act as a collection site and as an educational space for people to learn more about recycling. Honeywagon is built on integrity and quality of service, and this recycling center is a way for our local business to say ‘thank you!’ to the local community.”
