Leadville bus barn to get solar panels

EAGLE COUNTY — Eagle County will begin the installation of a solar photovoltaic array at the ECO Transit Bus Barn Building in Leadville. The project is expected to be completed and operational by the end of October.

Cost of the project will total $43,990, with funding coming from ECO Transit. Active Energies of Minturn was selected to construct the 14-kilowatt project. The new system is expected to generate 100 percent of the electricity needs of the facility and will pay for itself in approximately 11 years.

Upon completion, Eagle County will have five rooftop solar projects in service, including:

• Eagle County Justice Center with 18 kilowatts

• Eagle River Center with 77 kilowatts

• Lake Creek Village Apartments with 5 kilowatts

• Eagle County Building with 49 kilowatts

• ECO-Transit Bus Barn with 14 kilowatts

“Solar installations are an important step in furthering Eagle County’s 15 by ’15 policy,” said Commissioner Jill Ryan. “Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced and the county is able to cut expenses due to the offset of electricity costs.”

Adopted in 2013, Eagle County’s 15 by ’15 policy outlines a goal of a 15 percent reduction in spending on energy, fuels, water and paper by 2015 while supporting increased recycling, adoption of renewable energy sources and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The policy is an offshoot of the countywide Actively Green campaign.
