Eagle-Vail board election turns personal at meeting

Learn about the candidates

The Eagle-Vail Metropolitan District has posted on-line biographies and profiles of the candidates in the May 3 election. This is a mail-ballot election.

Darlynne Littman, Patti Sills, David Warner and appointed incumbent Chuck Toms are running for the two available four-year terms.

Carl Luppens, Moses Gonzales, Ruth Borne and Kim Bell Williams are seeking the single two-year term available.

Board member Louise Funk is ineligible to run for another term due to term-limit laws.

EAGLE-VAIL — The race for three seats on the Eagle-Vail Metropolitan District Board of Directors has become personal.

Several candidates for metro district seats came to Saturday’s meeting to complain about an email they attributed to outgoing board president Louise Funk.

That email, which runs to three pages of printed text, expressed Funk’s opinions of most of the candidates in the current board election, many of whom she associated with Eagle-Vail United. That residents’ group was formed to oppose a proposed ballot issue in November of 2015. That measure would have raised property taxes to pay for a $10.8 million program of community projects that included relocating the existing golf course clubhouse.

That ballot measure was defeated by a significant margin — 681 to 382.

Since that measure was defeated, voters in Eagle-Vail also replaced two incumbent members on the five-member board of the Eagle-Vail Property Owners Association. Jake Jacobson and Stephen Daniels were among the opponents of the ballot issue.

The email — which Funk made no public comments about — states, in part, that Eagle-Vail United is made up of people who “want to run Eagle-Vail as a hillbilly community.” The email also contains personal observations about candidates.

Metro district board candidate Patti Sills was among those who spoke to the combined metro district and property owners’ boards at Saturday’s meeting.

“It’s undignified — you should critique plans, not people,” Sills said.

Daniels left the board table to voice similar comments.

“On the positive side, there are eight people running for the metro district board,” Daniels said. “Every one of them would make a good board member.”

As the public comments became more heated, and more pointed toward Funk, board member Cindy Gilbert gathered her things and left the room, followed by Funk a few moments later.

Mail ballots in the board election will be counted Tuesday.
