Anthology of Vail tales wins Ski Heritage Award

VAIL — An anthology of Vail tales is being honored as one of this year’s top books

The International Ski Heritage Association, in town this week for Ski Heritage Week, tabbed “Women of Vail, Those Who Walked This Bridge, 1962-1970.”

The book won Honorable Mention in the 2013 ISHA Skade Award, for an outstanding work published in book form and focused in part on ski history.

“We are happy and honored to be part of this event,” said Carolyn Pope and Elaine Kelton, who compiled the anthology.

Some of the proceeds go to the Colorado Women’s Foundation and to the Colorado Ski Museum. The Women of Vail book is happily available at The Bookworm in Edwards, and Gorsuch, Pepi’s, and the Colorado Ski Museum in Vail Village.

The “Women of Vail” is an anthology; it’s anecdotes, it’s history, but mostly it’s fun.

They have 137 women in the book. The list could be endless, but they had to end it somewhere. So they picked 1970.

“They had to live here full time. They have to be here building lives,” Pope said.

They all tell tales of overcoming the challenges of building a ski resort and community from the ground up.

For example, Christie (Blanche Hauserman) Hill opened one of Vail’s first ski shops. She was on the cover of Life magazine four times, and tells about those early Vail days when used to sleep with her sleeping back pulled up to her head to keep the mice out.

“I don’t feel that I gave up anything moving to Vail. There was nothing difficult at all about it; it was an adventure. I thought it was wonderful, and I never thought of leaving,” she writes in the book.

Marge Burdick and her husband owned the Red Lion, Vail’s first restaurant and lodge. Up the street was Donovan’s Copper Bar.

“If Vail was a family, then the Copper Bar was its living room,” said Diana Donovan.
