Avon joins Compact of Colorado Communities to address climate change

AVON — On Aug. 22, the Avon Town Council passed a resolution officially entering the town into the Compact of Colorado Communities. Founded by Aspen Mayor Steve Skadron in collaboration with the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Compact was established earlier this spring at a statewide climate summit attended by more than 30 local Colorado governments, including the town of Avon.

“I applaud our town’s decision to join the Compact of Colorado Communities, and I believe it will drive the development of collaborative, sensible and meaningful strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Avon Mayor Pro Tem Sarah Smith Hymes.

“Through the adoption of the Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community and approval of an implementation plan to meet the objectives of the Climate Action Plan, the town has become recognized as a leader in its commitment to addressing climate change at the local level.”

The aim of the Compact is to be a tool for advancing climate-change education, action and policymaking in local governments statewide. The Compact focuses on building capacity in critical decision-making roles through collaborative learning activities enabling its members to rapidly scale up and advance climate action planning at the local level.
