EAGLE-VAIL – State wildlife officials trapped and euthanized a bear in Eagle-Vail early Wednesday morning.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Mike Porras said the department Tuesday received a call about a bear trying to break into a home on Elk Lane in Eagle-Vail. A trap was put out that evening and the bear had been captured by about 3 a.m.

The bear had already been tagged and relocated, which put it on the state’s list of problem bears. Those animals are euthanized for a second offense.

Porras said wildlife officers have received several reports of bears in Eagle-Vail and other neighborhoods already this summer, which could be a portent of things to come. Bears’ natural food is going to be somewhat scarce due to this year’s drought, which means the animals will be tempted to come into human neighborhoods to look for food.

“We want to remind people that for their own safety and for the animals’ sake, don’t feed bears or let them in your trash,” Porras said.

Unsecured trash could be one of the greatest threats to bears, Porras said, adding, “It’s almost as bad as throwing them food.”
