Beaver Creek’s holiday poetry contest returns

As we get ready to celebrate the holidays, it is once again time for the Beaver Creek annual poetry contest. Beaver Creek Resort Company, the Beaver Creek Children’s Theatre Company and Blue Creek Productions, Inc. invite all local young poets to write a poem and submit it to the contest. What wish or message would you like to share that expresses how you would like to make the world a better place? The winning poet will read his or her poem at the Beaver Creek Resort Company Tree Lighting Ceremony, which takes place on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. The winning poet will also get to throw the switch to light the Christmas tree and receive a $100 savings bond.

“It is such a joy to read the various entries to this contest,” said Brian Hall, Blue Creek Productions president and coordinator of the contest. “The creativity and insight of children warms my heart every time. It’s a magical moment to see the winning child read his or her poem in front of 2,000 people gathered at Beaver Creek during the Tree Lighting Ceremony. The crowd goes wild and the child is just beaming.”

The poetry contest is open to children ages 5 through 12. The deadline for all entries is Nov. 21, 2011 at 5 p.m. In order to be eligible for the grand prize, entrants must be able to attend the Beaver Creek Resort Company Tree Lighting on Nov. 25.
