AVON, Colorado – The National Association of the Remodeling Industry named Beck Building Co. in Vail a winner for the West of its annual awards competition in the total home remodel category.
“Remodels are a core part of our business and they are rewarding when you see the before and after photos. This particular home was dramatically different,” said Kevin O’Donnell, president of Beck Building Company.
This home remodel is a duplex in the New England style which the owners wanted to maintain. This house started as two stories with 8-foot ceilings on each level. The home was expanded to four stories by converting the existing attic to the third story and by underpinning the crawl space, turning it into a basement. The roof was raised 3 feet by restructuring the framing. This new third floor became a master suite. The basement was underpinned by creating new foundation walls under the existing footings and using a sophisticated waterproofing system which tied into underground sump pumps to drain the underground water and the new plumbing.
Finally, a 4-inch thick wall of Gypcrete was applied on the interior to sandwich the waterproofing between the two layers of concrete. The basement contains a bedroom, two bathrooms, laundry, pool table room, and a theater room. The project design for this site is unique because the house was doubled in size while maintaining the existing footprint.
The team on the project included: Beck Building Co., general contractor; architect Beth Levine; J Powell and Associates, interior design; and Mac Design, landscape architect.
An impartial panel of judges, experts in the remodeling industry and associated fields, selected winners based on entrants’ submissions including before and after photography and project descriptions.
