Editor’s note: Director’s Chair is a column where Kris Sabel, who is in charge of cultural programming for the Vail Valley Foundation, gives his expert take on shows not to be missed at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. Today, in place of Kris, Anne-Marie McDermott, artistic director for Bravo! Vail, guest writes about next week’s Orpheus Chamber Orchestra performance with pianist Richard Goode at the Vilar Center.

Some things in life are simply too special to pass up. As the artistic director of Bravo! Vail, it is my greatest pleasure to support and encourage everyone to attend the Vilar Performing Arts Center’s upcoming March 20 performance of the world-renowned Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and guest pianist Richard Goode.

Both the Vilar and Bravo! Vail share a passionate desire to bring audiences unforgettable musical experiences. So take it from me, you don’t want to miss out on the magical bond between Orpheus and Richard Goode. Having worked together for decades, toured extensively and made Grammy Award winning recordings, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra musicians and Richard Goode have formed a deep musical bond that will enliven every note of Robert Schumann’s stunningly beautiful “Piano Concerto.” How remarkable that this romantic music can be presented in the full spirit of chamber music, without a conductor.

The two opening works on the program – Rossini’s “Overture to L’Italiana in Algeri” and Mendelssohn’s beloved “‘Italian’ Symphony” – shimmer with exquisite detail and will resound wonderfully in the perfect acoustics at the Vilar Center.

An Orpheus concert is never just a concert – each one is a joy. And I wish I could be there to share the evening with you. Do go for an extraordinary experience, then please come find me at Bravo! Vail this summer to tell me how much you loved it. I’ll want a full report.
