VAIL — A routine mail check resulted in a hole in the side of the Vail Post Office after a vehicle crashed through the front windows on July 9.
According to reports from the Vail Police Department, a 52-year-old man who was stopping to check his mail accidentally drove his truck through the building around 8 p.m. that day.
The man told police that he had parked on the east side of the post office near the main doors. While sitting in the driver’s seat, he leaned over to get his key from the cup holder while trying to step on the brake, but he accidentally pressed on the accelerator instead. His truck went over the curb, across the sidewalk and hit the front of the post office building.
The accident broke one window frame off completely and shattered two double-pane plate glass windows. The man’s truck had minor damage and he was not injured. Nobody else was inside the building at the time of the collision.
Police said the man was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and said there was no intent to cause injury or damage. The man was cited for making an “unsafe move from a parked position.”
