Avon man gets probation for armed standoff with police

EAGLE — An Avon man was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to charges stemming from an armed all-night standoff with local police.

Brent Schoen, 40, kept police at bay all night when he locked himself in his apartment with a shotgun. The incident ended peacefully when he surrendered around dawn.

Schoen, who has a master’s degree and earned his bachelor’s from Auburn University, could have been sent to prison after he pleaded guilty to felony menacing and obstructing of a peace officer.

Instead, he was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and will live with family members on the Front Range. He spent 57 days in jail before he was sentenced.

What happened

Schoen had been the subject of two other police calls on April 22 as witnesses reported his “erratic behavior,” said Avon Police Chief Bob Ticer.

While there was nothing criminal about those calls, Schoen upped the stakes with the third call.

Around 9:30 p.m., Schoen was on the deck outside an Avon coffee shop when he picked up a purse belonging to another customer.

When another patron asked Schoen what he was doing with the purse, he picked up a metal bar and told the man if he called the police he’d find him.

He went to his apartment and locked himself in.

Because Avon police had already dealt with him a couple times that night, they knew who he was and where he lived. When Avon police officers showed up and he told them he had a gun.

They spent the next two hours trying to convince Schoen to come out, but he refused, Ticer said.

The Eagle County special operations unit — the SWAT team — was called to the scene, and trained negotiators spent several hours trying to convince Schoen to give himself up.

Finally, after the all night session, Schoen came out at 6:10 a.m.
