EAGLE-VAIL — A pair of Eagle County brothers faced more than two decades in prison for illegally growing marijuana.

But because they have turned their lives around, including leaving drugs and alcohol behind for sober living, Hunter and Nevada Furrow each received 90 days in jail and four years of supervised probation.

“All of our lives consist of a prologue and an epilogue and the chapters we draft in between,” said Jim Little, Hunter Furrow’s defense attorney, during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing. “We all wish we could go back and draft again certain of those chapters. Hunter is no different. He wishes he could edit those chapters that have him here in court today.

“That cannot be done. But his epilogue will most certain read differently than it otherwise would have.”

Hunter Furrow, 29, and Nevada Furrow, 37, admitted to District Court Judge Paul Dunkelman that they were illegally cultivating marijuana in their Eagle-Vail townhouses, a Class 3 drug felony.

In late January, SWAT teams led by the Gore Range Narcotics Interdiction Team — GRANITE — seized nine firearms and large quantities of marijuana during an early-morning raid. Prosecutors asked for jail. The brothers’ defense attorneys, Lauren Butler and Jim Little, argued that the medications police found were prescriptions.

They’ve been sober for more than 100 days, and both sought out treatment help for themselves, the brothers said. Both apologized to law enforcement and the others who had to deal with their actions, especially their parents, who were in court to speak on behalf of their sons.
