Three days after he was shot outside Deer Creek Middle School, 14-year-old Matthew Thieu was sitting up in his bed at The Children’s Hospital, joking, talking about going back to school, and, according to his mother, almost back to normal.

Matthew, who was shot in the back when a gunman opened fire as school let out Tuesday, may go home Saturday, said his mother, Pattie Thieu.

When the eighth-grader will return to Deer Creek is another matter, she said.

“I don’t want to rush that,” she said. “I want everything to calm down before he goes back.”

Matthew was critically wounded when he was shot in the back during the attack. To see him so improved is “a blessing,” his mother said Friday.
