EAGLE — Sunset View Cemetery is one of the most scenic and peaceful places in town. For that reason, residents have likely noticed the presence of heavy equipment at work at the southern side of the site.

Crews are building a columbaria wall and small courtyard at the corner of the cemetery that borders the Overlook Townhomes and The Terrace Neighborhood. Throughout the past two years, Sunset View Cemetery has master planned an expansion that extends cemetery uses into the tract of land where the columbaria wall and courtyard is under construction. This land was dedicated to the cemetery at the time of The Terrace subdivision development. As part of the master planning process, a first phase of improvements was identified for implementation in spring.

Specifically, the first phase includes three columbaria walls organized into a small courtyard located next to the existing cemetery and the parcel of land where the expansion is planned. The columbaria walls project has been selected in response to the increased demand for cremation and to provide a space at the existing cemetery for the internment of cremated remains.

The Sunset View Cemetery appreciates the adjacent neighbors and wishes to proceed with the least amount of impact and disturbance to nearby residents in implementing the columbaria walls project,” noted a June 1 letter from project architect Pedro Campos of Zehren and Associates Inc.

The cemetery board of directors selected Shaeffer Hyde as the general contractor to build the proposed improvements. Construction began a few weeks ago, and the cemetery board anticipates completion by mid- to late summer.
