Gypsum golf course sees record July

The Gypsum Creek Golf Course set new records for business in July.
“July was the busiest month in the history of the golf course, in terms of both revenue and rounds played,” said Gypsum Golf Director Tom Buzbee.
Buzbee said bad weather in March and April put the season off to a slow start.
“We usually get an advantage, being the first course to open, but the conditions were rough in the beginning,” he said. “Then the most remarkable thing happened this summer – the number of visitors started picking up. We track the zip codes where people come from and it’s wild how varied the places are – they’re coming from all over the country. I think people are starting to realize it is no longer a private golf course.”

Gypsum Creek used to be a private club known as Cotton Ranch. The lender foreclosed on the property several years ago and the town bought it in 2010. The course became public and now boasts some of the lowest rates in the region. For example, the summer weekend rate for 18 holes with a cart is $54.
“We couldn’t be happier right now in mid summer,” Buzbee said. “Last summer was good, which we based our projections on for this summer and we exceeded all of them.”
He said golf courses in this region of the country have been struggling through the first half of the year.
“The numbers have been down in the double digits all over the northern tier of states,” he said.
Not only is business up at Gypsum Creek, the course is getting very positive reviews from visitors.
“People who are visiting give you very candid and unbiased opinions,” Buzbee said. “A lot of these people travel and play a lot of golf, and they have many courses to choose from in this valley. It means a lot to us that they come here and are enjoying it. It is a feather in the cap for Gypsum.”
Buzbee added that the new restaurant in the clubhouse – Creek Side Grill – has been a boon for business.
“I think the restaurant makes a difference,” he said.
