Renowned scientist to host free seminar

EDWARDS — Renowned scientist and author Dr. Shawn Talbott will discuss the internal cellular protein Nrf2 during a free seminar at Battle Mountain High School on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nrf2 serves as a regulator of the body’s stress response — like a thermostat within our cells that senses cellular stress and turns on internal protective mechanisms.

“In some of the work I’ve done over the years with elite-level athletes, a common theme is that the athletes standing on the podium not only are the athletes with the highest states of physical performance but also are the athletes with the highest states of mental performance,” Talbott said. “The athletes who miss the podium are often those whose biochemistry is unbalanced and whose cellular stress spiked at the wrong time — leaving them fatigued, unfocused, injured or sick and allowing a balanced athlete to surpass them.”

With age, both the level of total Nrf2 protein and the efficiency of its activation decline, leading to reductions in levels of internal protective enzymes and increases in markers of cellular stress. Three important factors are proven to increase Nrf2 levels and to reduce cellular stress: exercise, a diet high in brightly-colored fruits and vegetables, and Nrf2-activating phytonutrients.

“The discovery of the Nrf2 pathway has given us insight into the precise cellular mechanisms that we can harness to … reduce cellular stress even in the face of what may initially look like overwhelming odds,” Talbott said.

An elite athlete panel including Talbott, Sarah Schleper, Anita Ortiz, Gary Stern and Jessica Crate will share their experiences with Nrf2 performance and recovery during Saturday’s seminar.

“Activating the Nrf2 pathway is a built-in way to turn on your body’s own production of protective antioxidant enzymes and anti-inflammatory proteins, as well as a host of cleanup and repair stress response and detoxification proteins,” Talbott said. “Reducing cellular stress and maintaining mental and physical performance during exercise is my secret weapon to getting into that feel-good flow state where energy, mood and focus are at peak levels.
