EAGLE — Eagle Valley High School senior David Garcia is focused. He’s determined. He’s committed. Garcia has worked hard and kept his eye on the prize – his future.

The Guardians Scholarship recipient will be attending Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. The scholarship is a full-ride for Garcia, and he intends to prove that he’s worth the investment.

“I truly want to make the most of it,” said Garcia.

Garcia moved to Colorado from New Jersey when he was just 2 years old. He attended Eagle Valley Elementary and Eagle Valley Middle School before becoming a Devil.

Garcia thinks that EVHS offered him rigorous classes and great extracurricular activities.

“I found out my true strengths and weaknesses,” Garcia said. “I found out that I enjoy exercising and weightlifting more than cooking.”

Garcia’s weightlifting teacher, John Ramunno, said that Garcia was always one of the hardest workers in class.

“David always gave his best effort in my class and always experienced huge personal gains,” said Ramunno. “David is a great role model for the young men in our community – he has a tremendous work ethic.”

What will Garcia miss the most about EVHS? “I will mostly miss all the teachers that have guided me to where I am now,” he said. “Without them, I don’t think I would have made it.”

Garcia said not only did he learn his strengths and weaknesses, he also learned different studying techniques for college. And even though he lost some old friends, he also made new friends with stronger relationships.

“The whole ambiance of EVHS is truly an amazing feeling,” said Garcia.

Garcia’s summer plans include working as much as possible to earn that extra money needed to attended college. He will work with his grandfather—doing custom tile jobs, and his dad in construction. After that, it’s westward to Grand Junction. Garcia is looking forward to beginning the next chapter as a college student.

“The whole thought of being independent and more responsible makes me nervous, yet excited,” said Garcia.

In five years, Garcia sees himself starting his path through life. He hopes by then he will have chosen a career that he wants to pursue and that he will have begun his journey.

“In 10 years, I see myself with a stable career and a family of my own,” said Garcia. “I see myself settling down and getting ready to raise children of my own.”

The quote that Garcia applies in his life is “Give a man a fish, and you will feed him for a day. Teach him the skill of fishing, and you will feed him for a lifetime.” Living by this quote proves that Garcia is a big fan of learning and education. That quote has stuck with him since the first day he heard it.

“I want to apply this to my life by being the best I can be; advancing myself in order to guide others towards success.”
