Beaver Creek wraps up ‘great season’

Beaver Creek’s Closing Day is today. Skiers and snowboards have nearly 1,200 acres to enjoy with Centennial, Cinch, Rose Bowl, Birds of Prey, Grouse Mountain and the Buckaroo Express Lift open.

2015-16 season

Snowfall: 312 inches

Max base: 70 inches

Total days: 138

Snow days: 64

Largest 24-hour snowfall: 13 inches (Jan. 31)

BEAVER CREEK — Don’t be sad it’s over; be happy it happened — it’s Closing Day at Beaver Creek.

The 138-day season began Nov. 20 and brought 312 inches of snowfall for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy, slightly below the resort’s average of 325 inches.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs, but for the most part it’s been amazing,” said Scott French, of Edwards, who has 140 days on the mountain this year, most of them at the Beav’.

There were 18 days of snowfall in December and 14 days in January, February brought only nine snow days and 31 inches of snow. The February snowfall happened early in the month, with 29 inches falling in the three-day span of Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

“Monday, I guess we go to Vail and try to wean ourselves off of our skis and our boards and slowly get our rafting and river running gear out. Thanks to everybody that lives out here. We have some great locals and a great community.”Scott FrenchEdwards

After a February to forget, a March to remember followed. More than half the days in March brought snow and almost 90 inches fell, the most of any month.

“We’ve had snow pretty much every week throughout March,” French said, “so it leaves us with snow-covered slopes for April.”

Beaver Creek closes Sunday with nearly 1,200 acres of skiable terrain open and a 60-inch mid-mountain base. The max base was 70 inches this year. The remaining open lifts are Buckaroo Express Gondola, Rose Bowl, Centennial, Cinch, Birds of Prey and Grouse Mountain.

Spruce Saddle and Talons Restaurant’s deck will be open serving food and drinks.

Eric Love, of Erie, has been to Beaver Creek’s closing week for the past eight years with his family. He doesn’t necessarily plan on it, he said, but it just happens.

“We love it. Beaver Creek I think is the best,” he said. “I kind of think it’s the Disneyland of skiing. They make it so easy and fun.”

Not Over Until it’s over

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end, and while it’s closing time for some, Vail is open one more week for others to enjoy.

“Monday, we start cleaning, repairing and getting caught up on all of our spring projects,” said Buzz Busby, owner of Coyote Cafe in Beaver Creek Village. “We had a great season. I think the whole village had a good season.”

“Monday, I guess we go to Vail and try to wean ourselves off of our skis and our boards and slowly get our rafting and river running gear out,” French said. “Thanks to everybody that lives out here. We have some great locals and a great community.”
