EAGLE — Channel your inner superhero and Get Your Cape On for Eagle Flight Days 2016
The community celebration, which was first held back in 1922 and has been presented without fail since 1961 is back this weekend with a few changes and big plans for family fun.
The biggest change is that Eagle Flight Days has reorganized to fit all its schedule into two days. The festival begins on Friday, June 24 and continues through Saturday, June 25. From the baby contest and pet show that launch the fun on Friday afternoon to the main stage concert that concludes the party on Saturday night, there is something for all ages.
All activities are held at Eagle Town Park unless otherwise noted, and here is a rundown of the Flight Days events:
Adventure Carnival

When: Open Friday and Saturday during other events
Details: Powered by Holy Cross Energy and you, the Adventure Carnival is new to Eagle Flight Days this year and it features an animal land toddler zone, a ropes course, kayaking, a mountain bike course, bouncey castles, a giant slide and peddle go karts. A $25 wristband give full access to the carnival for the entire weekend. Wristbands will also be sold in advance at Alpine Bank and the Eagle Chamber for $20.
Centennial Stage Free Concerts
Friday: 8 p.m. featuring Already Gone
Saturday: 6 to 8 featuring Instant Cash. 8:30 to 11 featuring Diamond Empire Band
Castle Peak Veterinary Pet Show
When: Friday, June 24
Time: 5 p.m.
Details: Hosted by Castle Peak Veterinary Service. Local kids are invited to bring their pets — anything furry, feathery, scaley or slimy. A slew of prizes will be awarded, including best costume.

Batson’s Baby Contest
When: Friday
Time: 5 p.m.
Details: Batson’s Corner Store/Eagle Pharmacy is sponsoring this contest is for babies younger than the age of 2. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
Best smile
Best eyes
Biggest dimples
Best theme wear (Get your Cape On)
Chubbiest feet
Best hat
Best swim suit
Most vocal
Baby relative look alike
Best hair

Lip Sync Like a Hero/Battle for the Cape
When: Friday
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.
Details: Got the moves, but not the pipes? This new event invites adults to perform without actually singing. Walk-ups are welcome by preregistration is preferred. For more information to register as an individual or a group, contact jbirdweaver@gmail.com
5K Fun Run
When: Saturday
Time: 7:30 a.m. run/walk
9 a.m. 1K kids fun run
Where: Start and finish on Wall Street between Sixth and Seventh streets.
Details: Presented by the Eagle Valley High School Booster Club. Pre-register at Alpine Bank-Gypsum, Eagle Pharmacy or Eagle Town Hall by 5 p.m. June 24 with $25 individual or $75 family fee. Registration will be accepted on the day of the race beginning at 6:45 a.m. and up to 15 minutes prior to race start time. Fee on day of race will be $30 and there is no guarantee of receiving a T-shirt, quantities are limited. Race day registration will be located near the run start. The course will loop through Eagle Ranch. Kids 1K Fun Run will also start at on Wall Street and circle the bike path between the Golden Eagle Senior Center and the Bull Pasture, with all the participating kids receiving a ribbon.
Pancake Breakfast
When: Saturday
Time: 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Details: Members of the Eagle Lions Club will serve up their signature flapjacks.
Contact: Look for the Lions Club trailer and the folks wearing purple vests.
Flight Days Parade
Theme: Get your Cape On
When: Saturday
Time:10 a.m.
Where: Broadway
Details: Entry fee is $10 plus one bag of candy that will be handed out following the parade. No candy can be thrown along the parade route. The parade begins at the corner of Fifth and Broadway and ends at Second Street. Entrants can pick up their number at the registration table located at Fifth and Broadway beginning at 8 a.m. Volunteers will assist with the lineup. Judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. Everyone will be considered for the Judge’s Award (the entry that best represents the parade of the theme.) In addition, ribbons will be awarded for the following categories:
Children’s Group
Marching/ Walking Group
Floats
Vehicles
Equestrian
Novelty (Clowns, animals, non-motorized vehicles)

Vail Precision Lawn Chair Brigade
What: Performance by the team following the parade
Time: 11 a.m.
Kids Crafts Tent
When: Saturday
Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Details: Free kids craft activities, sponsored by the Eagle Flight Days Committee.
Horseshoe Tournament
When: Competition is Saturday, beginning immediately after the parade.
Details: Entry fee is $10 per person
Silent Auction
What: Silent auction prizes include everything from golf and lodging packages to landscaping materials. Proceeds from the auction will help defray costs for the 2017 Flight Days celebration

Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
My First Superhero: Mom’s Recipe Bake Off
When: Saturday
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
Details: Whip up your mom’s best confection for this competition. Please provide enough for 100 small tastings. Serving supplies will be provided. Tasters will vote on first, second and third place.
Bucket Jam Band
When: Saturday
Time: 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Details: Led by former Eagle Valley schoolteacher Gerry Lell, this participation event is for kids ages 6 – 12. Sign-up will take place at noon near the stage. Participants will play bucket drums, “Boomwhackers” (pitched percussion tubes) and other percussion instruments. Two to three jam band sessions will be offered depending on turnout. By the end of each session, the participants will perform a song or two in genres including rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and country. For more information contact Gerry Lell, 970-874-8777.
Basketball Shoot Out
When: Saturday
Time: 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Details: Register on site prior to competition start time. Prizes will be awarded.
Talent Show
When: Saturday
Time: Registration beings at 2 p.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. The show starts at 3 p.m.

Ages 14 to 17
Cash prizes for the top-three finishers in each category.
