October is coming early to Gypsum this Saturday when the town hosts its third annual Oktoberfest from noon to 6 p.m. at Lundgren Theater Park.
The day features games, live music by the Swiss Austrian Connection, food from O.W.’s Heritage Sausage and a special seasonal beer – Gyptoberfest – made specifically for the event by Bonfire Brewing. Vendors will also have merchandise available to purchase.
Admission is free but everything else is cash-only. Beer is $5 and some of the contests have entry fees.
“I have about five games planned, but I am not sure if we will get to all of them,” said organizer Anna Englehart. “It depends on when the band will be taking breaks.”
The contests include:
Stein Holding – Hold two or three full steins with your arm at a 90-degree angle. Whoever holds it up the longest wins. There will be divisions for men and women.
Brat Eating – Eat the most brats in a set amount of time. Winner receives a punch card to the rec center. Cost is $5 to enter.
Nail Hammering – Whoever can get all the nails into the log the fastest. There will be divisions for men and women.
“People seem to enjoy the games,” Englehart said. “They are easy and fun, and we always fill all the spots.”
Scott Ruff, another organizer of the event, said Bonfire Brewing crafted Gyptoberfest for the town’s inaugural October ode in 2011.
“Since then, Bonfire started distributing it in cans throughout Colorado,” he said.
